New vs used – What to consider when buying machinery.

When you’re looking for some machinery, whether it be agricultural, horticultural, or farming machinery you may be considering both new and used. But what are the benefits and cons of both of these? And what should you be keeping an eye out for if you’re buying used machinery?

Used Machinery

The first reason you might be looking for used machinery over new is because of your requirements. Perhaps you’re on a budget and are looking for a deal, or maybe you have your eye on a specific model which isn’t produced anymore, here are a few pros and cons of how used machinery can fit your requirements or how it can cause more hassle than it’s worth.

Pros

• Price, when purchasing second hand you tend to have more leeway on the price and get a better deal. Not only is the price reduced because the machine has been previously used, but you can also shop around a bit more. With new machines, dealer by dealer the prices don’t fluctuate immensely, whereas, with used machinery with a bit of luck, you may strike yourself a bargain.

• You know it works and how it works. Purchasing used equipment often means it isn’t the latest model, and so isn’t as technologically advanced. But maybe that’s not what you’re looking for. If you just need something that works for its intended purpose and is nothing fancy, simpler might be better. You also know what it’s worked in the past and the seller can also let you know more information on reliability.

Cons

• Limited products. Although it may be one of your only choices to find that model you really want that isn’t made anymore, you are limited to what people are selling at the time. If you’re not in a rush for your machine then this can still be a good option.

• Previous owners may not have looked after the equipment. Depending on where you source your second-hand equipment, it’s sometimes impossible to tell how reliable your new piece of machinery is going to be. You don’t know what it’s been used for, what it’s been through, or how often. You also don’t know if the individual has the required knowledge to know if the machine needs work or has issues. This con can be bypassed by purchasing from someone you know has the skill and knowledge or purchasing from a dealer who has more in-depth technical knowledge of the equipment.

Used equipment Purchase tips

• Speak to the seller & learn more about how the equipment has performed, how it’s holding up, and If they think any repairs may be needed in the future
• Inspect the equipment fully before purchase, even test it out if possible.
• Ensure you are purchasing from a reliable person or dealer who has all the details of the equipment, its make, model, hours of use, and servicing information.

New Machinery

Perhaps you’re after the latest model or just prefer to buy machinery with a guarantee. There are a good few benefits of purchasing new equipment as well as some drawbacks. Here are some:

Pros

• Finance options. Although in some places there are finance options available for used equipment, it’s more difficult to come by in comparison to finance available for new equipment. This allows you to get the new equipment you need, without waiting to save or taking a huge financial blow all at once.

• One of the main reasons people decide to go for new equipment is the peace of mind having a warranty brings. Particularly if you know you are going to put your machinery through its paces. It’s important to know that if you are choosing to purchase a new machine, you know what’s involved to maintain your warranty as often this includes the requirement of regular servicing.

• New features. Machinery is changing fast and that means that new machines will come with an abundance of features designed to make your life easier. If you simply want it to serve its function then purchasing older models would be more what you’re looking for but if you’re interested in how far technology has come to make your life easier, then browsing the latest features of the newest models might be for you.

Cons

• Cost, obviously if you are buying new, the cost is going to be more than that of a used piece of machinery, however with it comes a bit more security in the equipment and the knowledge of who to call and what to do if something goes wrong.
• Limited availability of older models. New equipment sellers prioritize the latest models. Meaning it may be more difficult to source specific older models you might be looking for.

• Speak to your local dealer about the requirements you have for the machine, they will be able to provide you with recommendations and may introduce you to a brand you might have not tried before.
• Ensure you know what type of warranty you have, how long it is, and what requirements are needed to maintain it to get the most out of it.
• If money is an issue, be upfront about it with your local dealer, they will be able to advise you on what finance options are available.
