Robotic Mowers FAQs: Everything You Need to Know About Automated Lawn Care

Robotic mowers are becoming an increasingly popular choice for homeowners looking to keep their lawns in top condition without the effort of traditional mowing. At Gammies Groundcare, we’re often asked how they work, what’s involved in running one and whether they’re the right fit for different types of gardens. Here’s the questions our team has been asked recently.

Where do the grass clippings go?

An Automower® doesn’t have a collector, instead the clippings are left behind on the lawn. Unlike your traditional mower, which you typically use when the grass gets too high, the Automower® keeps grass short, cutting little and often leaving fine clippings that don’t need to be collected and instead are returned to the soil. Acting as a natural fertiliser for your lawn, improving your lawns health.

Do you have to charge it?

Automower® charge themselves. On set-up, a transport path is created to allow the mower to return itself to its base, so when it is low on charge it will return to the charging station and recharge itself, no human intervention required! When it is done, it will continue mowing.

Are robotic mowers difficult to maintain?

Robotic mowers aren’t any more difficult to maintain than your traditional mower and have the same key points. Keeping the machine clean, checking the blades and annual servicing.

Like any mower, Automower® can get grass build up near the cutting unit and wheels, this requires regular checking and cleaning as well as the blades, checking these for damage and for wear and replacing them when needed will keep your Automower® providing you with a sharp cut.

Regular servicing is important and it’s not different in robotics. Your Automower® will be working daily, and so ensuring it is regularly serviced allows you to keep on top of maintenance, detect potential faults early and keep your mower working well.

What happens if it gets stuck?

If the garden layout has changed, the soil conditions are disrupted by the weather or the garden has new obstacles, then sometimes your robotic mower can get stuck. If this happens, depending on the model you may get a notification on the app.

If this occurs you just need to find the mower, turn it off using the stop switch on the top of the mower and identify the reason. This may be a patch of mud from the rain, or a stick stuck in the wheel motor, solving this and re-starting the mower will typically resolve the issue.

If you are having frequent issues with your mower, you can get in touch with our team for more information.

How does it know where to go?

Husqvarna Automower® can be installed a few different ways. Wired mowers use a boundary wire to set a perimeter for the mower to keep within, wireless mowers utilise satellite-based technology to follow virtual boundaries set out during installation. The latest Husqvarna technology includes AI vision; these mowers combine the camera with satellite navigation to ensure coverage even in areas with weak signals.

Can it handle slopes?

Different models contain different features designed for different gardens. For those with un-even terrain and slopes, the Husqvarna AWD Automower® offers slope handing of up to 70%.

How much is a robotic mower?

The price for an Automower® varies depending on the model required. This is determined by the type and size of area it is going to be cutting. A wireless Automower® will also come with an additional cost of the reference station equipment if required, and both can have an installation cost if you prefer professional installation.

There are alternatives such as used machines and leasing options which can help with the cost. We can provide you with a quote based on your garden, get in touch for more information.

Can it handle multiple areas?

Yes, you can use your Automower® in multiple areas. The number of installations possible per mower, depends on the model of your choice. If your areas are connected, then you can set up multiple areas during the installation process or within the app. If they are not connected, then you can create a transport path, providing the mower can physically drive to the area, to allow it to access this area to mow.
